About the Artist

Reif Myers

Born on Maui, Hawaii to an artist mother and a surfer father, Reif spent his first two years as an American before moving half way across the world to Perth Western Australia.

Growing up by the beach and spending days after school painting at his mum Jos' studio, Reif developed a passion for art and surfing early on. At age 15 he launched his mens board shorts label Ocean Zone which he still runs to this day.

From a young age Reif has developed his own distinctive naïve style of art. His scenes are filled with colour, characters and playful visual surprises that reveal themselves slowly to the viewer.

Inspired by beach culture, travel and social experiences, Myers creates worlds that feel both familiar and slightly surreal. Objects, animals and people interact in unexpected ways, bringing a light-hearted sense of randomness and curiosity to each composition.

Reif's work is best described as art to be enjoyed rather than analysed. Its busyness entices the viewer to spend more time engaging with the painting, pointing out new stories whilst hopefully having a laugh.

He has held shows in London, Sydney, Fremantle, and Dubai where he had his first International Exhibition 'Seagull in My Drink' hosted by NASAB. Currently Reif sells his work worldwide online and is represented by Clarendons Fine Art in the UK and some States of the US.

How I Work

Starting with a blank canvas, sponge and acrylic paint, each piece begins as a meditation, sometimes eyes closed I add layers of colour and texture that build up over time…

With no sketch in mind, shapes begin to reveal themselves and my eye begins to pull out objects that match my signature icons I use throughout my paintings…

As characters and recognisable icons begin to fill the canvas, I fill gaps with blocks of colour and eliminate dirty lines and begin to turn the painting into an abstract scene with everything out of proportion…

This gives the artwork a light-hearted, carefree sense of randomness and bring you into my world…
